Senior Communications Co-ordinator – Women’s Rugby XV's and 7's

Rugby Australia (Rugby AU), the governing body of Rugby Union in Australia, is looking for a Senior Communications Co-ordinator to be primarily responsible for the communications and public relations functions of two areas of the game with significant opportunity for growth: Women’s Rugby and Sevens.

It is an exciting time for these pillars of rugby with the Buildcorp Wallaroos embarking on their campaign for a Rugby World Cup in New Zealand later this year. The Sevens teams are in the process of completing successful World Series seasons, ahead of the Commonwealth Games and their own Rugby World Cups in South Africa later this year – with the goal of success at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Women’s Rugby and Sevens allow an opportunity for trying new things and pushing the boundaries with our communications function to achieve positive and broad coverage across the media landscape – a stimulating prospect for any aspiring communications or sports marketing professional.

In addition to these areas, this role will also be required to contribute to the communications function across other areas of the Rugby AU business, including The Wallabies, Super Rugby, community rugby, corporate and operational support.

The successful candidate will also be the “go-to” person within the business for all communications matters across Women’s Rugby and Sevens – while also being required to contribute value in other areas.

Key responsibilities:

Strategy and Advice

  • Work with the Head of Communications and stakeholders across the business to develop communications strategies and plans for relevant portfolios
  • Implement the strategic priorities of the business across their areas of responsibility
  • Provide strategic communications advice to relevant stakeholders, as well as players and team management
  • Create and execute integrated internal and external communication plans as required.

Stakeholder and Relationship Management

  • Develop and maintain effective and positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, particularly media
  • As a trusted business partner/adviser to internal stakeholders, identify proactive internal and external communication opportunities, and develop plans to execute these opportunities
  • Be a communications expert for internal stakeholders.

External Communication

  • Writing – everything from media releases to letters, scripts, speeches, and reports
  • Media relations – including proactively pitching story ideas, managing reactive enquiries, and generally chasing positive coverage across rugby, sport, and other media
  • Develop and publish content across Rugby Australia’s digital platforms and social media channels
  • Contribute to Rugby AU corporate publications, including the Annual Report.

Internal Communication

  • As part of an integrated communications function, develop and execute internal communications in relation to dedicated portfolios.

Issues Management

  • In conjunction with the Head of Communications, identify issues that could impact Rugby AU’s reputation – and develop and implement communication plans to mitigate risks
  • Help the broader team when issues/crises arise, and execute tasks to support as required
  • Be an advocate for rugby in the world of women’s sport.

Specific Portfolios

  • Women in Rugby – Buildcorp Wallaroos, Super W, Classic Wallaroos, National Pathways Competitions, and associated competitions (such as the Women’s Rugby World Cup)
  • Sevens – Australian Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams, as well as Sevens National Pathways Competitions, and associated competitions (such as the World Rugby Sevens Series, Sevens Rugby World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games)
  • Provide support to the broader communications department in the execution of communications plans, and in the management of media operations for Rugby AU events.

Administration

  • Manage media contact database and distribution system
  • Update and maintain statistics, team and player profiles as required
  • Improve team processes as required to ensure Rugby AU’s communication objectives are delivered on time and with effective outcomes
  • Administrative and operational support for the communications department – including accreditation, media databases, and media monitoring.

Measurement and Evaluation

  • Oversight of day-to-day media monitoring services and relationships.

To be successful, you will need to have:

  • University degree in communications or journalism.
  • Excellent writing skills across a variety of formats
  • Strong verbal communication skills – and an ability to influence media and other stakeholders
  • A creative mindset – willing to push the boundaries with new ideas and ways of thinking
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail – capable of delivering accuracy and success within timeframes
  • Solid expertise in content development and publishing across a variety of platforms and channels – both technically and creatively
  • Experience in graphic design will be well-regarded
  • Demonstrates a customer service mentality
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills – ability to positively contribute to other work streams
  • Comfortable working with senior colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Manages change positively and confidently and responds quickly to changing priorities
  • Understanding of Rugby and/or the Australian sporting landscape will be advantageous
  • 3-5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or journalism
  • In-house or agency experience welcome
  • Experience in sport highly regarded, but not essential.

After hours and weekend work, and interstate travel work may be required.
