Rugby Australia (Rugby AU), the governing body of Rugby Union in Australia, is looking for a Head of Clubs and Competitions who will be responsible for leading a team that supports the Rugby Community to deliver the game in an effective and safe manner. This includes ongoing enhancement and education of our competition management system, implementing measures to ensure the safety of children and young people, piloting new initiatives to decrease injury rates and developing policies and procedures that support a safe and administratively effective experience for players and their families, coaches, match officials and administrators.
Reporting to the General Manager, Community Rugby, the responsibilities include:
Strategy
- Oversee the research, innovation and projects designed to drive high levels of player safety and welfare.
- In conjunction with key staff in the Community Rugby Department oversee the research and projects associated with maximising participation and skill acquisition.
- Oversee Administration and Rugby Xplorer (with regards to its function as a Player Registration and Competition Management platform)
- Manage and implement a plan to build organisational capability at club level.
- Oversee the development of policies and procedures, in conjunction with key stakeholders, related to the delivery of the game and implement a plan to build understanding at community level.
- Oversee the development of Safeguarding policies, in conjunction with key stakeholders, and implement a plan to build understanding at community level.
- Produce reports, insights and analysis from the data collected from Rugby Xplorer to inform future strategy.
- Work with Member Unions and key stakeholders to facilitate delivery of their Strategic Plan goals – relevant to Clubs and Competitions.
- Work with the General Manager, Community Rugby to achieve and maintain productive, progressive and harmonious relationships with Member Unions and key stakeholders.
Operational
- Fulfil the role as the first point of contact following any catastrophic injuries and coordinate with relevant stakeholders across Rugby Australia and the Member Unions.
- Support the delivery of training and education associated with Rugby Xplorer.
- Engage with School based competition management groups to maximise the alignment with RA Policies and Procedures
- Effectively manage the financial position of the team. Manage and monitor budget by tracking and approving expenditures (within delegated authority), control costs, validate expenses and anticipate and correct financial forecasting errors
- Contribute to the management of the National Player Insurance Levy Scheme, including working with our broker, insurer and Member Unions.
- Provide support to, and participate in, other Community Rugby initiatives as directed by General Manager, Community Rugby.
People Management
- Provide leadership by example and play a leading role in providing guidance and mentoring to relevant staff, and be up-to-date on the activities of those staff
- · Foster a working environment that inspires the team to succeed. Motivate and manage to ensure a committed and professional team.
- Provide appropriate timely performance feedback to employees (critically constructive).
Pre-requisites
- Appropriate tertiary degree or relevant experience (e.g. sport management/sport development)
- Working with Children Check and Police Check
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in sports administration
- Previous experience in managing a budget
- Strong communication skills, written & verbal ability to develop and deliver presentations on strategic & operational direction
- Working knowledge of Community Rugby standards, expectations and opportunities
- Disciplined Budget management with previous experience in managing a financial budget
- Demonstrated high level project management skills, including an ability to analyze, plan, monitor, evaluate and prioritize.
Desirable
- Previous position held in junior/local sporting organization
- Experience in sport, in particular at the community level
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in managing people
- Ability to resolve sensitive and critical issues internally and externally
- Demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders – i.e. volunteers, coaches & administrators
- Demonstrated ability to think, plan and mobilize others to act strategically
