Marketing and Communications Manager – NT/SA/TAS

Rugby Australia (Rugby AU) the governing body of Rugby Union in Australia, is looking for an experienced Marketing and Communications Manager to be primarily responsible for the marketing and communications functions for Northern Territory Rugby Union, Rugby Union South Australia, and Tasmania Rugby Union.

The role will also service media for the Rugby Governing Body in the States and Territory noted above as well as leading the development and execution of marketing and communications strategies and plans that drive participation and engagement in Community Rugby.

Key responsibilities for this role:

Manage Strategy

  • Implement the strategic priorities of the three Member Unions – Northern Territory Rugby Union, Rugby Union South Australia, and Tasmania Rugby Union.
  • Develop communications plans for Community Rugby to help generate participation at all levels of the game
  • Provide strategic communications direction and counsel to relevant stakeholders, as well as working closely with grassroots stakeholders
  • Strive to be creative and innovative in all aspects of communications and activations
  • Lead and manage the development of all marketing campaigns
  • Lead and manage the development of compelling creative marketing collateral, using in-house resources and external agency support and management.

External Communication

  • Proactively pitch story ideas to media, managing reactive enquiries, and generally chasing positive coverage across rugby, sport, and other media
  • Writing – everything from media releases to letters, scripts, speeches, and reports
  • Planning, creating and briefing email marketing campaigns including some degree of automation.
  • Develop and publish content across the three Member Unions digital platforms and social media channels.

Issues Management

  • In conjunction with Senior Staff at each Member Union, identify issues that could impact Rugby’s reputation across Community Rugby – and develop and implement communication plans to mitigate risks
  • Assist the broader team when issues/crises arise, and execute tasks to support as required

  • Administration
  • Ongoing management of marketing deliverables across relevant programs, namely, budget and timeline management, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring all processes are adhered to in a timely fashion.
  • Manage media contact database and distribution system
  • Co-ordination and reporting of paid media and other marketing activities.
  • Improve processes within the management of Community Rugby to ensure each Member Unions communication objectives are delivered on time and with effective outcomes

Measurement & Evaluation

  • Oversight of day-to-day media monitoring services and relationships.

To be successful, you will need:

  • 3-5 years of experience in marketing, communications, media relations or journalism – preferably in sport
  • Demonstrated experience in pitching and achieving strong media coverage – ideally across sports, news, and lifestyle media
  • Experience developing communications strategy and plans
  • Experience developing marketing creating and collateral (from brief to launch)
  • Experience in digital marketing/social media
  • University degree in marketing, communications, or journalism.
  • Excellent writing skills across a variety of formats
  • Strong verbal communication skills – and an ability to influence media and other stakeholders
  • Ability to lead stakeholders confidently and competently – i.e., sporting Clubs, other unions, sponsors.
  • A creative mindset and strong understanding of journalism and media
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail – capable of delivering accuracy and success within timeframes
  • Solid expertise in content development and publishing across a variety of platforms and channels – both technically and creatively
  • At least a basic grasp of working with graphic design templates
  • Demonstrated customer service mentality
  • The ability to be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills – ability to positively contribute to other work streams
  • Ability to manages change positively and confidently, and responds quickly to changing priorities

After hours work, weekend work and interstate travel may be required
