Australia’s wingers in Emma Tonegato and Ellia Green have ensured that the Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens team will have plenty of pace out wide for the next two seasons with both players committing to Rugby Australia until 2020.

Green and Tonegato were two of Australia’s stars in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with both players crossing for tries in the historic final against New Zealand to win Gold.

Ellia Green made her debut for Australia in 2012 in the USA, in round two of the HSBC Sevens World Series, where she foreshadowed things to come, scoring three tries in her maiden tournament.

Emma Tonegato made her debut in Dubai, 2013 and in her first year of International Sevens, played in every tournament of the Series, scoring 11 tries in her first year.

Since then, Tonegato has gone on to become one of the most prolific try scorers on the HSBC Sevens World Series, currently 9th overall for tries scored on the World Series. Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens Head Coach John Manenti said: “Ellia and Emma are incredibly exciting players and further shapes our squad for the next two years.

“We have seen what amazing players they are with ball in hand, but defensively they are fearless in the contact zone with both players willing to put their bodies on the line for their team mates.

“Their work ethic and commitment to the team knows no bounds and we are really excited to have both players in the gold jersey until 2020.”

Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens player Emma Tonegato said: “I’m really excited about signing on for two more years with the Aussie 7s.

“It really is amazing coming to work every day, playing Rugby with my best mates and the culture we are building with this team is really strong.

“We’re coming to the end of a tough pre-season as we get ready for our Olympic qualifying year and we’re looking forward to getting back out there on the park on the HSBC Sevens World Series.”

The Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens team heads to Colorado this weekend for round one of the HSBC Women’s Sevens.

Fans will be able to watch the Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens side on Aussie soil at the HSBC Sydney Sevens on February 1-2 in early 2019. Tickets are available from Ticketek.
