Piggy in the Middle
Description
Assemble participants in groups of five within a grid, and assign one participant as the 'piggy in the middle'.
On the Coach's signal, participants pass the ball among themselves attempting to keep the ball from being intercepted by the 'piggy in the middle'.
If the ball is intercepted or dropped, a new 'piggy in the middle' is nominated with the activity continuing until all participants have had a turn.
Equipment
- 4 x cones per group
- 1 x ball per group
Coaching Outcome
Participants learn to pass the ball into space, avoiding other players by using their vision and communication skills in this fun and competitive catch and pass game.
Change It
- Alter the size of the grid, with a smaller grid more challenging for participants.
- Add a second 'piggy in the middle' to encourage greater teamwork and communication among participants.
- Assign a target number of pass completions e.g. ten.
Check for Understanding
- Where do our hands need to finish when we pass the ball?
- What shape do our hands need to make when catching the ball?
- What can we do to stop the 'piggy in the middle' from intercepting the ball?
